At WeMindTheGap, we believe that understanding the challenges facing young people means looking beyond the headlines.
Every month, a new statistic, report, policy announcement or political speech tells a story about young people. We hear about exam results, employment figures, skills shortages, mental health, social mobility and opportunity. But too often the people making the headlines are not the people living the reality.
Month in review series is our response to bridge that gap.
Each month, we explore what is being said, examine what is actually being done, and ask what it means for young people across Wrexham, Flintshire and Cheshire West and Chester. We combine national insight with local experience, drawing on what we see every day through our programmes, partnerships and work alongside young people.
This is not simply a commentary on policy or current affairs. It is a challenge to think differently. To question assumptions. To look beyond the numbers and consider the individual lives behind them. To recognise where progress is being made, where gaps remain, and what role we can all play in creating change.
At WeMindTheGap, we know that opportunity is not distributed equally. We also know that young people’s futures are shaped not only by government decisions, but by employers, educators, communities, families and organisations choosing to act.
Our hope is that this series informs, provokes and inspires. Because the most important question is not what the latest report says about young people, It’s what we are prepared to do about it.
As you read, we invite you to do more than simply absorb the information. Challenge your assumptions. Start conversations with colleagues and partners. Share the insights that resonate with you. Consider what role you, your organisation or your community can play in creating opportunities for young people.
Whether that means offering a work placement, becoming a mentor, opening doors through your network, influencing policy, supporting our work or simply paying closer attention, small actions can have a lasting impact.
If this series of articles leaves you thinking, don’t stop there. Let it be the start of a conversation and the catalyst for action. Because changing the future for young people starts with all of us.
